The Vendredi Pack Legend
Book One:
Mari’s Tale
By: Asumi
Chapter 1
Star Pack:
“Can you tell me more stories about the Vendredi Pack, Conmeh?” I begged. “Oh C’mon Mari, haven’t you had enough stories for one night?” Conmeh yawned, he was as tired as I was but I still wanted to hear about the Vendredi Pack. “They had many wolves from across the world to try to become the 13 to keep their powers,” Conmeh yawned again. “When a young wolf came to get her chance to become one of the Thirteen, Rezzpha was awestricken by her good looks. This wolf’s name was…” Conmeh laid his head on his paws and drifted to sleep. I groaned; once Conmeh is asleep, you can’t wake him up until he feels like it. “Great, now I’ll never know what that wolf’s name was. Or if she became of the Thirteen.” I muttered quietly to myself.
It was in the middle of spring, but a cold wintery breeze blew into the cave, bringing snow flurries with it. I shivered and huddled back to the warmth of my mother, I set my head down on my paws too. Everyone in Star Pack was huddled around each other for warmth. We were all sure winter was behind us, but it seems winter has come once more, but far too early. Weather has been out of whack for awhile, Conmeh and my father, Jemmai tell me about before it was like this, when winters were harsh, spring was beautiful, summer was hot, and fall was pleasant. But now, it seems the seasons has bundled together and clashed the weather.
I looked up, stars were twinkling like they always were, “I wonder if the Thirteen Wolves are up there, watching us. Like they always have, but what has caused them to punish us with this weather? Have we done something wrong?” I wondered. Another cold blast blew, “Are you sure this is her?” I heard someone talking through the wind, it was a female wolf, but she was defiantly not from Star Pack. “This pup can’t be her, Killu. Kumarii is much older than this pup.” A different voice said. I was tempted to growl at the voices, they must be intruders. But when the wind stopped, so did the voices. I listened extra hard, but there were no footsteps walking away. I shook my head, “Was that just my imagination?” I put my head on my paws again, and this time I did fall asleep.
“Mari, wake up, C’mon Mari it’s almost noon. You gotta wake up.” A paw was jabbing me in the side. I blinked my eyes open and I saw Deskay jump back. “Geez, Mari, you scared me!” he groaned, I got up and stretched, “yeah I could tell.” “Have you noticed how good it feels yet?” He changed the subject. I looked around, “Are you sure I’m not dreaming? This is the greatest it’s ever felt in a long time!” Deskay laughed, “Yeah I’m sure your not dreaming. I heard Conmeh grunt as he got up, “after last night, I’m not surprised if Conmeh is sore.” I whispered to Deskay. He nodded and Conmeh wobbled over to us, “Well, thank Rezzpha, it’s finally feeling like spring.” I bounced, “Conmeh, what was the young wolf who Rezzpha was taken by? You never told me!”
Kilma came over and set down a elk, with help from Lizhu. We thanked them, and we all started eating. “Her name was Kumarii, she was just a little older then you two. But being the Wolf of Lightning, her fur always shone.” Conmeh let Deskay and I have the rest of the elk. Kumarii sounded familiar, then it hit me. “Kumarii, that’s what those voices were talking about.” I thought. “Conmeh, do you know if Kumarii is still one of the Thirteen?” “Ah, Kumarii has been missing for awhile, that’s why there is no lightning recently. But how’d you know Mari?” Conmeh gave me a look and soon after so did everyone else. “Er… the wind told me.” I stuttered.
The whole pack was quiet, whispers bounced from wolf to wolf. A sudden laughter came from behind me, “Mari, are you sure you weren’t just dreaming? Last time I checked, wind can’t talk.” “Mika, I’m not lying! The wind told me that a pup from this pack is Kumarii. Kumarii has returned!” I howled. I was excited, I don’t know when I got excited, but I am! When I looked at everyone, they all stared at me like I was crazy. Mika bounced, “Then I must be Kumarii!” Mika held her head high, “Deskay can’t be her because he’s a brute, and you, Mari are crazy, so it has to be me!” Conmeh laughed at her comment. “What? What’s so funny, Conmeh?” Mika asked, getting worked up again. “Oh no, Mari is certainly Kumarii, but the only way she can restore peace is if she finds the other Twelve.” Mika gasped, and glanced at me then back to Conmeh, “How would you know?”
“I don’t quite know myself, but only one way to find out.” Conmeh turned to me, “Mari, I haven’t told you about all the Vendredi members, did the voices give you a name?” I thought real hard, “Yes, one said Killu. Is that a Vendredi member?” Conmeh nodded and howled, “Can you it imagine it? A Vendredi member right under our very own noses! Rezzpha will be thrilled! They will become spirits again! Weather will return to normal! And Spring will be beautiful, Autumn will be pleasant, Winters will be harsh, and Summer will be warm! Peace will be renewed!” Conmeh was very excited. “But, Conmeh,” I interrupted his excitement, “What is it, Kumarii?” his tail was wagging, and he seemed so happy, “What if you’re wrong? What if I’m not Kumarii?” “Nonsense, child, you are Kumarii and you will bring peace.” He stopped, his eyes widened, “Oh no,” he muttered. “What is it?” He was staring at my father, and he didn’t look pleased.
Conmeh hung his head, and sulked over to my father. Instantly the pack started crowding around me wishing me luck, and praising me. “Back off!” I howled. They set their distance from me, instantly. I shook my head, this was all too much, I ran to the one place in our territory where no one can bother me; Menki Cliff. It’s a cliff that looks onto the whole northern region. But it was long forgotten but rumors still remain about it. I laid down on the cliff with my paws dangling over the side. “One day I’m the pup everyone looked up to for being the leader’s pup, now I’m a Vendredi member? This… is so farfetched.” I thought aloud. A swift wind brought weak leafs to dance around me, “This is Kumarii, no doubt about it, but if she’s here, that means so is… oh no! Go warn Rezzpha!” the wind told me. “Warn Rezzpha of what?” I thought aloud again. The bushes that enclosed this place rustled, “Did they mean to warn Rezzpha of someone who’s coming after me?” I stood up, ready to fight, but out came Deskay. “I figured you were here, Kumarii.” I stopped him, “Stop calling me that!” he stepped toward me, “But it’s who you are,” “That hasn’t be approved yet,” I corrected him, “So why are you here?” I growled at him. “Your father wants to talk to you, with the pack.” He turned around and left. I gave one last stare at the view, and then followed Deskay.
When we got there, the pack was already in uproar. With my presence everyone fell quiet. “Glad you finally decided to join us Kumarii.” I growled at my father. “Stop calling me that!” I howled, he gave me the slightest nod, “Mari, Conmeh and I have discussed the Vendredi matters. I’m sorry to say, but since it is your destiny, you are no longer a Star Pack member, but a Vendredi member.” He tried to hide it but I saw the hurt in his eyes before he looked away. My mother jumped in front of me, “What kind of father are you? To just give away your pup because she is different?” I could hear the pain in her voice clear as day. “Whizzma, she is no longer our pup. Drop it!” he growled at her as if she were an enemy. “Stop fighting!” I howled, everyone looked at me, “I don’t care that I am different. But what kind of leader sends away some member because of power reasons. Are you scared that I may over run you, Phamin? If this is truly the pack I was raised in, then maybe finding out that I am a Vendredi member makes me realize what this pack is truly.” “Such wisdom from a pup, this is truly Kumarii.” Conmeh sighed. Mika scoffed behind me, “Kumarii is supposed to be strong, let’s test it!” she didn’t even finish the sentence before she leaped at me. I had no training in fighting, and Mika was bigger and stronger than I am, she could easily kill me, and with jealousy giving her more strength. Just to sum it up, I’m doomed. I still fought, I heard gasps when I clawed Mika’s neck without even meaning to and she staggered away. “Mari has shown the strength she was blessed with. Kumarii truly lives within her.” Conmeh sighed again. I stared at my father, “If you want me, I’ll be at Menki Cliff, where I’ll be living from now on.” And with that, I ran back to Menki Cliff.
“So I truly am Kumarii, from the start I’ve been Kumarii. But somehow, I’m not surprised by it, as if I knew the entire time, but this is all news to me.” Bushes rustled again, but Conmeh came out instead of Deskay. “Mari, I understand you must be surprised.” “By what, the fact that I’m Kumarii; I’m not, somewhere inside me I always knew, it just never exposed itself.” I looked back to the cliff’s view. Conmeh sat with me, “Mari, since you are here, there is something I need to tell you about. I wonder if you have any of Kumarii’s memories.” I shrugged, “Well one way to find out, do you remember anything about Dimay? I thought real hard, but when he said that name, I felt warm and comforted. But no memory of Dimay, I shook my head. Conmeh sighed, “But I did feel something…” I said; Conmeh looked interested, “What feeling did you have?” I smiled, “It was a good feeling, and it felt as if I was surrounded by wolves I love, like my mother and father, and even you Conmeh. I felt safe, just by saying that name, Conmeh, I felt as if nothing had changed. No one new I was Kumarii and we were all happy.” He nodded, “Well truth is that Kumarii was in love with Dimay.” My mouth gaped, “Problem was he was the Wolf of Death. He was rejected to be one of the Thirteen. He placed a curse on them that whatever they did would die out eventually. That’s why all wolves die eventually, if it wasn’t for his curse, we would never die. Thus the saying, ‘Nothing lasts forever.’ That curse took a lot of energy, and Kumarii was so in love with him that she gave all of her energy to him to keep him alive, thus killing herself, or so everyone thought. Since that curse affected Kumarii too,” I finished, “Her energy died out within Dimay,” He nodded, “But since you are here, that means Dimay is somewhere too. He still wants revenge on the Vendredi Pack, you must go find them before he does.”
Conmeh put the faith of every wolf in my pack on my shoulders, I could sense it from here. I sighed, “Conmeh, this is all new to me, can I get some time just for it all to settle in?” He inhaled, “Well I guess so, I forgot that you are just a pup, the idea of a Vendredi member walking in front of me is breath taking. You should get some sleep, good night, Mari.” He started to walk into the bushes, “Conmeh,” I stopped him. He turned to look at me, “Aren’t the Vendredi members, spirits? How will I be able to find them when they aren’t walking among us, like normal wolves?” Conmeh walked back to me, “I’m so forgetful, truth is they are walking among us like normal wolves.” I lay down and once we both got comfortable, Conmeh started to tell me the story. “After Kumarii disappeared, Rezzpha was crushed; he was losing the will to go on, so he asked Tizza,” after a confused look from me, he explained, “the Wolf of Life, to make him into a normal wolf. Of course she did as she was told and he was put to sleep and when he woke up he was a normal wolf, but still with his fire abilities. Tizza didn’t want to confuse him with the other wolves, so she placed a mark on him. No one knows where it is, not even Rezzpha himself, but rumor says it’s in the shape of a lone flame. Frase heard the news that her mate couldn’t walk among her any more, so she too asked Tizza to turn her into normal wolf as well. Tizza put a different mark on Frase, rumor goes that its in the shape of a sun. Once Tizza explained to the other wolves what she had done, they went into total chaos. To calm them down, she turned them all into normal wolves, with their own mark on them. Honm, the Wolf of Stone, has the mark of a river stone. Katsa, the Wolf of Time, has a circular shape with dashes in side of it. Gophia, the Wolf of Space, has stars and a small moon. Vinma, the Wolf of Water, has a small drop, and her brother, Quimba, the Wolf of Ice, has an iceberg shape. Winzer, the Wolf of Earth, has a small blob, then a sprout shape coming out of the blob. Ponke, the Wolf of Shadow, has what seems to be a wolf shadow. Nence, the Wolf of Wind, has a simple swirl, kind of like what the river looks like when it clashes with rocks. Enzen, the Wolf of Plant Life, has a blossom. You now know all the Vendredi members. So you know what to look for when you go find them. They are all in one pack so when you find one, you are sure to find them all. That’s all I know about them that will be useful on your journey.” Conmeh ended with a sigh. “Conmeh, that’s all I could ask for. I’m going to head out when the moon is full. It means a lot that you defied my father to come see me tonight. But I know leaving you will hurt, so I ask you not to come here when the moon is full, I will howl to you, and all the ones that went against my father. It will be awhile before I return, I know. So I want Star Pack to howl back to me, so I have what I need to push me on. Will you deliver that message for me?” I asked him.
He nodded, “I will leave you now, I’ll be back in the morning, I’ll give you my share of elk. Good night Mari. And good luck, bring peace to us all.” He walked away, and as soon as I knew he was out of earshot, I looked up at the moon peeping through the clouds. It was half full, which meant I only had seven days to learn everything I need to know to survive on my own. “Not gunna be easy,” I muttered to myself. “I can talk to Conmeh, he can teach me things, and my mother can teach me how to hunt, and fight, just in case I run into any trouble. I’m sure there are other wolves that went against what my father had done, when Conmeh comes back in the morning, I’ll ask him to spread the news. Great I have a plan, and I’m talking to myself.” I sighed and hung my head, “Kumarii were you as crazy as I am?”
A brisk blast of cold air sent voices again, “I told you, she can hear us, this is Kumarii, but where is Dimay? We can feel pain in this form, he can possibly kill us, Rezzpha!” a young voice shrilled. A strong male voice responded, “I know, I know, but if Kumarii gets here, we will be able to go back to our spirit form safe from Dimay.” “I wonder if she can talk to us, even though we are so far away from her,” the young voice said again. “Only one way to find out, Kumarii, can you hear me?” Rezzpha asked. I walked around as if being driven by some force, but I only walked in circles. “Yes, I can hear you.” I responded. “We can too! Oh this is wonderful, now we can tell you where we are and you can find us so much quicker!” the young voice shrilled again. “Now, now Katsa, we have no idea where she is, and she has no idea where we are. She still has to find us on her own.” Rezzpha sighed. “Oh, how disappointing, I really wanted to meet you, Kumarii.” Katsa sighed. I didn’t notice that the wind stopped but I’m still talking to them. “Who am I speaking to?” I asked. “Oh dear, I forgot she doesn’t have any of Kumarii’s memories. Well, I’m Katsa, the Wolf of Time. Rezzpha is here too, I’m sure you’ve heard of him.” I laughed, “Of course I have, he’s the leader of the pack right?” “Yes that’s right, oh Kumarii he doesn’t want to show it, but I can tell he’s really excited to hear you!” Katsa said happily. I laughed, “Uh oh, Frase alert, Kumarii. You’re in for an earful!” Katsa whispered. “Who are you talking to?” An older fray asked, “Um just a wolf pup from the southern region.” Katsa sounded so innocent. “Northern,” I corrected, “I live in the Northern Region.” “Oh yes, that’s right.” “By the way, my name is Mari. I belong to Star Pack. Well I did, before my father kicked me out.” Frase gasped, “Now why would your father kick you out of Star Pack? I heard that they are very strong,” “Um,” I tried coming up with an excuse to tell Frase without telling her that I was Kumarii, something told me she wouldn’t be to excited to find out. “Power purposes,” I said plainly. “Oh I see, well, I have to go hunt, nice talking to you, Mari.” “Nice to meet you too,” I said back.
“Nicely done, Kumarii, you pulled it of without telling her!” Katsa praised, “Now I know this is Kumarii, she was just as mischievous too!” “I’m impressed too, Kumarii.” Rezzpha hadn’t spoken in awhile. “Would you guys stop calling me that? My name is Mari, and I know my destiny is to be Kumarii, but it’s because of that name I’m not able to see my friends and family as often anymore. So please, just call me Mari.” They never responded, and after awhile I started calling, “Katsa? Rezzpha? Are you there?” but no one answered, I wondered why, but then I was blinded by morning sunlight.
I yawned, I had no idea I was up the whole night talking to Rezzpha and Katsa. I looked out to the view I’ve known for months. The new sun was peeking through the mountains, spreading its ribbons through little cracks in the mountain.
